HISTORY
of the Urban League Young Professionals of Pittsburgh
The Urban League Young Professionals of Pittsburgh (ULYP-Pittsburgh),
an auxiliary of the Urban League of Pittsburgh, is composed
of professionals who live, work and serve in the greater
Pittsburgh region between the ages of twenty-one (21)
and thirty-nine (39). This new developing force is composed
of key local talent of young professionals who are committed
to serving the greater Pittsburgh region through social
and civic engagement.
The
organization was founded February 20, 2002. 24 African
American young professionals of diverse professional
experiences are the charter members. ULYP-Pittsburgh
is one of 36 chapters of the National Urban League Young
Professionals (NULYP), which serves as the umbrella
organization under the National Urban League to support
the League’s three pronged agenda:
Financial Literacy
The National Urban League is working hard to focus on
economic self-sufficiency. ULYP-Pittsburgh
will assist in this endeavor by championing initiatives
that provide a solid foundation for financial literacy
in its membership and the larger community.
Real-World Education
ULYP-Pittsburgh recognizes the incredible need to give
back to the next generation who will follow in our footsteps.
It also recognizes the lack of positive role models
for many of the young people throughout our communities.
ULYP-Pittsburgh will work to help build a bridge between
young professionals and the school environment for young
people ages 11 to 18. Mentoring will be a major element
of that strategy.
Political Participation
Using various platforms, such as candidate forums and
voter registration drives, ULYPPittsburgh
will work diligently to ensure that the community-at-large
is informed and educated on issues that affect their
lives and communities. As part of the national agenda,
ULYP-Pittsburgh will also work to
engage its constituents in the political process and
encourage them to effect change for better communities.
